What is Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) or Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Marie is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist and Completed Decongestive Therapist trained and certified by the Academy of Lymphatic Studies.  She has also been trained by the Chikly Institute (Dr. Bruno Chikly) to perform  painless and relaxing, whole-body lymph drainage therapy sessions or combination LDT and massage. The entire procedure physically stimulates the lymphatic system to move excessive fluids that are associated with the body's lymphatic system. The movement of lymphatic fluid through lymphatic nodes changes the fluid dynamics around our connective tissues.

Lymph Drainage Therapy alleviates numerous conditions related to swelling, water retention, edema, lymphedema and physical traumas.  It also addresses pregnancy, including engorgement, sore nipples (transient, chronic), plugged ducts, wounds, fissures, ulcerations, bruises and dermatitis (eczema).

Lymphatic drainage therapy also can provide relief from chronic inflammation and pre- and post-surgical applications, and can be used for cosmetic applications, such as mastoptosis, scars and traumas.

For individuals recovering from cosmetic surgery  - enhanced circulation and fluid movement speeds recovery.  It's effect is similar to hyperbaric therapies which speed wound healing through the enhancement of oxygen to the cells of the body.

Science now shows that Lymphatic Drainage Therapy helps the body respond by:

Clearing lymph congestion
Reduces swelling and fluid retention from trauma, surgery or lymphedema
Speeds wound healing
Oxygenates the cells
Reduce fibrocystic conditions
Promote collagen fiber production
Reduces fine lines, minimizes wrinkles
Reduces the appearance of cellulite (temporarily)
Promote overall wellness

What body conditions can warrant Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT)?

Fibromyalgia, arthritis, chronic pain, sports injuries, sprains, strains, post plastic surgery, sinus and congestion problems, scar tissue reduction and stress are some of the conditions that can benefit from Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT).

Marie is certified through the Academy of Lymphatic Studies (Founded by Joachim Zuther - and registered with the Saskatchewan Aid to Independent Living.  That means if you have a prescription from a doctor for compression or to see a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, she can wrap and order compression garments for you.

What functions does the body's lymphatic system perform?

The lymphatic system is composed of assorted size vessels and lymph nodes located throughout the body. There are hundreds of lymph nodes in the body whose function is to filter the lymph fluid. An important part of the body's immune system, lymph fluid contains cells that remove harmful bacteria, viruses and other undesirable substances. The lymphatic fluid system does not have a muscle similar to the heart, which would aid in "pumping" the lymphatic fluid consistently. Therefore, when the lymphatic nodes or vessels become damaged due to surgery, injury or for any other reason, gentle Lymph Drainage Therapy stimulates the lymphatic fluid flow. Lymph fluid is normally encouraged to flow by the body's natural motion of muscles, organs and other body parts.

Is this massage therapy for me?

Some people have more serious medical reasons to receive this massage therapy, however; others regularly receive lymphatic drainage massage to simply aid in the reduction of minor swelling, congestion, headaches, acne and other conditions. Many people wish to encourage their immune system to function as effectively as possible and choose to receive this relaxing therapy.  It is MUCH less pressure than experienced even with a relaxtion massage, but it is proven to be very effective.  Technically, it is a therapy, but not really massage because the therapist is working mostly just below the skin to stimulate lymph flow.  Lymph Drainage Therapy is covered under the Massage Therapist Association of Saskatchewan's massage modalities.
